Superheroes saved the day at a fundraising football event in Inverkip. Spiderman and Superman were just two of the characters who kicked off the fundraising five-a-side football event at the village’s community hub. The event raised £395 which will be used to help create a youth club within the facility.
Andrew Mitchell, who is a volunteer at the hub, said:
“Around 30 people played, which was brilliant, especially since it was the first time we’ve organised this. We were overwhelmed by the prizes people donated for the raffle, people have been so generous.”
Centre manager Kevin Rodgers says the fancy dress tournament, which was overseen by referee Tommy Hempseed, shows that the facility can play a big part in bringing the village together. He said:
“It’s great that it was held in between Christmas and New Year, it was something for people to do over the holidays. We’ve had quite a lot on recently, with our first cinema night which helped to raise money towards our youth services. We want to target secondary school children in S1 to S3 as there isn’t as much for them to do so from March onwards we are hoping to set up a youth club. We’re also getting some funding from Sainsbury’s for resources and hoping to train up some further volunteers.”
Andrew and Kevin have also thanked Riverside Inverclyde for donating individual superhero trophies and the Kip Chippy, who donated a shield.
Riverside Inverclyde's Head of Business Investment and Operations, Andrew Bowman said:
"A huge congratulations to Andrew, Kevin and to all of the players and volunteers who also supported this inaugural event. Riverside Inverclyde was delighted to support by providing the trophies and we look forward ot seeing the youth club up and running at the Inverkip Community Hub."
Andrew and Kevin would also like to thank everyone who donated to the tournament prize raffle: Stuart McMillan MSP, CalMac, Inverclyde Leisure, Ivy Cottage Dental Practice, Sainsbury’s Inverkip, Get Fit In 30 – Gillian Adams, Kilted Kin, Greenock Morton FC, Smiths of Greenock, Cardwell Garden Centre and Jim Mitchell Gardening Services in Largs.
