Big Brands To Arrive At Port Glasgow Tesco

A trio of high street fashion retailers are setting up shop in Port Glasgow. Women’s clothing chains Dorothy Perkins, Wallis and menswear firm Burton will all open within the town’s Tesco Extra store in March.

Function Suite Application For Former Social Club

An application has been made to turn the former Greenock Dock Workers' Club premises into a function suite. The proposal for the Tobago Street building has been submitted by REOS Ltd which owns the the neighbouring restaurant The Exchange and Cruden Hall.

An Inverclyde school has achieved prestigious places in Scottish rankings. St Columba’s, Kilmacolm, was named fourth in a league table of top Scottish independent secondary schools, as well as second in the West of Scotland.

Grant Boost For Inverclyde Community Groups

Local grant-making trust, Inverclyde Community Fund, has awarded money to Inverclyde Family Contact Centre and Hillend SC Art Club, to support their local projects. Inverclyde Family Contact Centre offers a safe, friendly and neutral place where children from separated families can spend time with one or both parents and sometimes other family members.

The Oak Mall has been given a welcome boost at the start of the new year — after a major retailer pledged its future and announced a major store revamp. Argos is undergoing a complete refurbishment which will enable customers to order items via digital tablets.

Domino's Pizza have expressed "firm interest" in opening a takeaway outlet in Larkfield, Greenock. The unit wold be part of a proposed development on the site of the former Larkfield Masonic Association hall at Auchmead Road, near Inverkip Road.

Triple Award For Inverclyde Butcher's Haggis

A Champion Inverclyde butcher is celebrating after completing a record-breaking hat-trick of titles for his delicious haggis. Nigel Ovens, of Mearns T McCaskie in Wemyss Bay is celebrating being crowned ‘People’s Choice Champion’ at the annual Haggisfest Competition in Oban for the third year in a row.

Heroic Effort Helps Raise Money For Inverkip Youth Club

Superheroes saved the day at a fundraising football event in Inverkip. Spiderman and Superman were just two of the characters who kicked off the fundraising five-a-side football event at the village’s community hub. It raised raised £395 which will be used to help create a youth club within the facility.

Councillors Approve Bungalow For Injured Inverclyde Firefighter

Councillors have agreed that a developer can build an extra property at a new housing estate in Gourock -- to provide a specially-adapted bungalow for injured Greenock firefighter Andy Adams. Inverclyde Planning Board decided that the circumstances justified going against the council's policy on open space provision.

Inverclyde Glass Artist To Mark Stornoway Naval Tragedy In New Work

Glass artist Alec Galloway is starting a series of artworks commemorating one of the worst naval disasters of the 20th century. The Ioloaire sank in the early hours of January 1 in 1919 off Stornoway.

Extra Time To Vote For Inverclyde Sports Awards Nominations

The deadline for making nominations for the 2017 Inverclyde Sports Personality Awards has been extended to 15 January 2018. The nine categories are Inverclyde Senior Sports Personality of the Year, Junior Sports Personality of the Year, Disabled Sports Personality of the Year, Coach of the Year, Club of the Year, Team of the Year, School Team of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year (up to age 25) and Adult Volunteer of the Year.

Whinhill Golf Club's Sponsored Walk Boosts Inverclyde Good Causes

Members and friends of Whinhill Golf Club, Greenock, raised £2,350 for charity from the club's annual sponsored walk. The walk from the club to Largs town centre was in aid of Children in Poverty Inverclyde and the Haematology/Oncology Day Unit at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

Planners Refuse Permission For Starbucks Drive-Through In Greenock

Inverclyde officials have rejected a plan by Starbucks for a £1million drive-through coffee shop beside the A8 in Greenock. The development was proposed for a site at Cartsdyke Avenue at Cartsburn, beside the RBS mortgage centre. Council planning officers have now considered the application and refused it.

West College Scotland’s Finnart Street campus in Greenock has the biggest five-year maintenance backlog bill of Scottish Colleges at £15.53m. The Education sector has seen its financial health deteriorate in recent years and is already facing an £80m bill to harmonise pay.

Oak Mall bosses say jingle tills are still ringing this Christmas despite the loss of one of the centre's biggest names. Manager Claire Jefcoate says some retailers are doing well but acknowledges that the recent exit of Marks and Spencer to Port Glasgow has been a blow.

Ferguson Marine Shipyard Publish Ferry Launch Day Film

Ferguson Marine in Port Glasgow have produced a short film telling the story of the MV Glen Sannox ferry launch last month. The three-minute movie, which has been posted online, features time-lapse footage of the vessel being built and the yard being redeveloped at the same time, interviews with yard workers and various angles of the ship entering the Clyde.

Landmark Greenock Marina Building Gets Planning Permission

Planners have approved a £1.25million development at James Watt Dock Marina, Greenock, including a cafe, retail and office units. The building will provide an operational office for the marina. A bistro café and three retail and office units are incorporated, all enjoying views over James Watt Dock. A 'feature' tower about 30 feet high is part of the structure.

Greenock Cut Volunteers Awarded £10,000 For Conservation Work

Greenock Cut Conservation Volunteers are celebrating being awarded a grant of just under £10,000 from National Lottery and the Awards For All Scotland fund. The Conservation Blitz@The Greenock Cut project will run at the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre and Lunderston Bay for 12 months from February in partnership with Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park Countryside Rangers.

New Beacon Chief Chosen

Greenock's Beacon Arts Centre has appointed a new chief executive. Sean Paul O’Hare leaves his position as director of the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre, a multi-disciplinary arts centre in Naul, County Dublin in January to take up his position early in February.
